The Caribbean's Clearest Blue
Few coastlines challenged my sense of color quite like Cancún and the Riviera Maya. This is not a destination defined by a single shade of blue.
The Caribbean begins as luminous crystal over shallow sandbars, transitions into radiant turquoise, and gradually deepens into rich cobalt before dissolving into the profound navy of open water. Capturing that progression became the foundation of this piece. Rather than relying on a single wash of color, I built the sea in delicate layers, allowing each hue to flow naturally into the next until the coastline reflected the remarkable clarity that makes these waters among the most beautiful in the world.
Separating the sea from the land is a remarkably thin ribbon of brilliant white sand. Though visually understated, it is the defining element of this coastline. Behind it, restrained olive greens represent the low forests of the Yucatán Peninsula, while delicate turquoise accents mark the region's extraordinary cenotes. These freshwater limestone sinkholes are woven throughout the landscape and are as essential to the identity of the Riviera Maya as its celebrated beaches. Omitting them would have meant leaving out one of the peninsula's most remarkable natural treasures.
This coastline also carries the enduring legacy of the ancient Maya, whose civilization flourished here long before the arrival of modern travelers. I wanted the artwork to honor both the region's natural beauty and its cultural history without allowing either to dominate the composition. My hope was to create more than an accurate map. I wanted to capture the unmistakable feeling of standing where impossibly clear Caribbean water meets one of the world's most storied coastlines.
The Caribbean seems to reserve its most extraordinary blues for this stretch of Mexico, and this piece is my tribute to that unforgettable meeting of light, sea, and history.
